The Latest Update
Over the past few months we have asked for you help in calling, writing or otherwise visiting with your lawmakers. We have one last thing to say, THANK YOU!

As you know, everything was on the line for Kansas children.
Here is what was accomplished: Lexie's Law passed! Children's Initiative Fund protected! More information available to the right.

Visit our Kansas Action and Information Center to get the latest information on child care issues pending in the state legislature. Get involved, take action, and make this a better world for our children.

Child Care Aware® of Kansas accomplishes advocacy work through monitoring state and federal policy issues; dissemination of information and policy alerts to the local R&Rs; discussions of the major policy issues with partners; and representation of the Network's positions and agenda at appropriate state hearings, forums and conferences.

Lexie's Law

The law establishing basic inspection standards and child care requirements for Kansas passed its final hurdle at about 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday and is now headed to Governor Parkinson for his signature.

This legislation was spearheaded by Lexie’s parents, Kim and Bryan Engelman, and by Ava Patrick’s parents, Alecia and Steve. Both sets of parents were on hand early Tuesday morning for the final passage of this legislation, just as they have been at every step of the process. Their work, along with your support helped make this law a reality. And, Kansas child care facilities will be safer places because of it.

Children's Initiative Fund

In a year with very little good budget news, we are happy to report that the Children’s Initiatives Fund has been protected. The CIF will not sustain any cuts this year and funding for programs that serve nearly 340,000 children will remain intact. Next year will be another very difficult year for early childhood programs. And, while a number of good, quality programs have been slashed to their core or eliminated outright…Kansas lawmakers kept their promise to our children. Again, we would like to extend our deepest appreciation for all of your hard work – you made the difference!
